Mens watches were not always worn around wrists. For many years, pocket
time-pieces were the style de rigueur, and it was considered effeminate
or just plain silly to wear one around the wrist. Even that surprising
fact aside, however, men's watches, durable pieces of technology that
they are, have a long history inside pockets, one that had a very
formative period in the tiny European country of Switzerland.
In
particular, the Swiss city of Geneva played an incredibly important role
in the formation of these miniature timepieces, and has created a
legacy that many know has lasted up to the present day. It was in that
city in 1601 that makers of the timepieces created the industry's first
guild, and from that moment forward the city became known as a crucially
important centre in the world of time-telling. Over a century later, in
1770, the very first perpetual timepiece was introduced, which modified
the industry in an enormous manner.

This
invention was hugely important for the industry, as it laid the
foundations for the self-winding time-teller. This efficient, highly
technological piece of machinery was introduced in 1842. To this day its
importance in the world of time-telling is still felt.
Over the
years, a number of very influential companies arose out of Switzerland.
Perhaps most famous is Rolex, which was recently rated by Business Week
magazine as--out of 100--the 71st most valuable brands on the planet.
The company's origins go back to 1905, and it has garnered a serious
reputation for time and accuracy. One theory is that the brand's name
comes from a contraction of the French words for "exquisite clockwork,"
which together sound a little bit like the word "Rolex." One notable
innovation by Rolex was introducing a changing date on the face of the
timepiece.
Another great brand is TAG Heuer, which is very famous
for its sportier pieces and standout men's watches. The company is
older than Ro-lex, and goes back to 1860. It has become well known for
its "chronographs," as well. The brand garnered its sporty reputation in
many ways, including serving as the official timekeeper of several
Summer Olympic Games. In addition, many stars in Hollywood latched on to
the pieces, and can be even seen today on billboards sporting these
fabulous pieces.
Finally, there is Omega, the infamous brand the
American and British militaries used at one point to tell time in very
important battles in the twentieth century.
